many open books

I began the Python For PHP Programmers project with great energy back in late 2023 and made good initial progress. And then Apress came calling to commission the 7th edition of PHP 8 Objects, Patterns, and Practice. This is to be presented in two volumes for the first time with a lot of new material and it consumed most of my spare cycles in 2024.

Although, in an agency context, I can delegate tech work to colleagues, that’s not really an option for a book. At least, not if I intend to keep my name on the cover, which I do in this case.

And so, things went a little dark and quiet on the book. Now, though, the first volume is out and second volume is awaiting a technical review. That means I have been able to turn my attention back to Python for PHP Programmers.

The decision to split PHP 8: Objects Patterns and Practice into two volumes was a good one, and it has caused me to reconsider my plan for the Python project a little. I have decided to break the book into three volumes. These will be available either individually or as a bundle and will break down like this:

Python for PHP Programmers: Core The essentials required to get a PHP coder up and running with Python.

Python for PHP Programmers: Advanced Deeper into the language, focussing especially on collections, objects and modules.

Python for PHP Programmers: In Practice A practical round up, providing cookbook-style recipes and delving deeper into topics such as testing, dependency management, Web development and standards.

Any of the beta readers who kindly volunteered last year will get access to the full bundle.

The first chapter of PPP: Core will go out to beta readers early next month. After revision, I will make it available for free. Presales for the first volume will be enabled at that time. I am aiming to release the first book by the summer.

So I’d better get back to writing!
